📅 Planting Days in October 2026 — Jamaica Moon & Almanac Guide
October is the backbone of a Jamaican home garden. The second rains have arrived, hurricane peak is passing, and the soil is still warm. If you time your sowing to the moon the way the old-time growers did — and the way the Farmers' Almanac still does — you'll get stronger germination and faster, sturdier seedlings. Here are the planting days for October 2026, and the crops to pair with each window.
🌱 Above-ground crops — October 2 to October 15, 2026
These are the days to sow anything you'll harvest from above the soil: leafy greens, fruiting vegetables, legumes, corn, pumpkin. The moon is waxing from new moon (October 1) through full moon (October 17), and traditional almanac wisdom says sap rises with the moon's light — good for seedlings pushing up.
Top above-ground picks for October: callaloo, pak choi, cabbage, lettuce, tomato, sweet pepper, scotch bonnet, string beans, pigeon peas, corn, pumpkin, cucumber, okra.
🥕 Below-ground crops — October 17 to October 30, 2026
The waning-moon window is when the almanac points to root crops. Energy moves down to the roots instead of the leaves — handy for anything that bulks under the soil.
Top below-ground picks for October: carrot, beet, radish, onion, dasheen, sweet potato, Irish potato (highland), ginger, turmeric.
Why planting by the moon still matters in Jamaica
You don't have to believe in moon magic for this to work. In the tropics, the moon's phase lines up roughly with how the soil holds water and how hard the midday sun is on new seedlings. Waxing-moon mornings tend to be dewier, waning-moon afternoons tend to be drier — and that matches what above-ground vs. below-ground crops want. Our grandparents didn't know the physics; they knew the result.
October planting-day calendar — quick reference
- Oct 1 (New Moon): rest / prep beds / add compost
- Oct 2–15 (Waxing): sow above-ground crops — best days Oct 4, 7, 8, 11, 12
- Oct 17 (Full Moon): transplant seedlings, strong watering day
- Oct 18–30 (Waning): sow below-ground crops — best days Oct 20, 21, 24, 25, 28
- Oct 31: rest / weed / plan November
What else to do in the October garden
- Mulch heavily. The second rains leach nutrients fast. A thick layer of dry grass, banana trash or chopped-up weeds holds moisture and feeds the next crop.
- Start seed trays for Christmas tomatoes. Sow tomato and pepper seedlings now in trays and you'll transplant into the garden in early November for a December-January harvest.
- Side-dress hungry crops. Callaloo, corn and cabbage planted in September will be hungry by mid-October. Chicken-manure tea or a nitrogen fertilizer keeps leaves broad and green.
